Bog wood plaques are created from trees that have been preserved in the bog for approximately 5000 years. The wood we use has been carbon dated as being between 4800 years old (yew) and 6000 years old (oak).Irish Bog Wood pieces can be engraved with chosen text to celebrate any special occasion be it a wedding, anniversary, retirement or a thank you.They are also ideal for club or business plaques, but they are NOT suitable for use outdoors!Irish Gift Solutions will always email you a layout of your gift to approve before we create it. - While each piece has been dried and seasoned it should not be subjected to extremes of temperature.
- Bog wood, is wood from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay for thousands of years.
- The wood is stained brown by tannins dissolved in the acidic water. Irish bog-wood may come from any native tree species naturally growing in or near bogs.
The bog wood we use is made from parts of trees - usually stumps that
have been uncovered usually when draining or extracting peat from bogs.
Often in boggy land the bog wood also rises to the surface, and is then
removed.
Around 4000BC the bogs of Ireland spread and trees at
the edges of the bogs were covered with water and eventually formed part
of the bog.
The bog wood was preserved by the acidic and
anaerobic (no oxygen) bog waters which prevented the wood from decaying
normally. Bogs are noted for their preservation properties and many
interesting artifacts have been unearthed from Irish bogs over the
years.
The bog wood we use has been air dried for at least 12 months before it is cut into plaques and finished.
